Pick n Pay Junior Road Series, KwaTsaduza, 24 August 2013

Central Gauteng Athletics and KwaTsaduza Athletics club hosted one of the well attended Pick n Pay Junior Road Series race.  

 The event with 2,5km and 5km took place at the Bulithando Park in KwaThema Ekurhuleni on Saturday the 24 August 2013.  

The event started at its normal schedule of 08:00am with 2,5km followed by the 5km for under 14. The arena was well branded with Pick n Pay and Central Gauteng Athletics at the centre stage. The hosting club did their home work and the race saw just over 1200 kids taking on the streets of kwaThema beating the chilly morning of Saturday.  

The race saw newcomers causing upset to the usually contenders in both races. In 5km Langelihle Nkosi from KwaTsaduza AC won the 5km boys with time 15min13secs while in girls category, Makgotso Njubane from Scaw Harriers Athletics Club won the 5km with the time of 15min.01sec  

The hosting club coach was delighted to have the club represented more than once on the podium. “This indeed is an inspirational move and motivates other potential kids to pull up their socks and train hard”, said the coach, Sparks. We saw the schools, parents and educators coming out in numbers to support their kids. This is indeed what the hosting of these races is trying to achieve, to bring all these key players together in support of our potential talented kids which encouraging physical activity. 

The junior race was also embraced and supported by community authorities in form of councillors and sports council representatives. They were also grateful to Pick n Pay for the opportunity and to Central Gauteng for striving to developing the community of kwaThema especially with the kids’ development programme presented.  

At the presentation, winners were awarded with gold and silver medals respectively and Pick n Pay vouchers, dictionariers, pens, shoes and school bags from Sixbar. Pick n Pay was represented by Lena Toka and Central Gauteng Athletics’ Mandla Radebe and Boyce Mfuneko Joko.  

There were other give-aways in form of shoes, sandals, snacks and kids had to dance their way out to earn the prize and the event was full of entertaining with the help of Coca Cola too.  

The key players including the club medical combi from NEMS, club marshals, community police forum members and metro police were on time to ensure that the event goes smoothly. There were about 60 marshals,25 CPF members,2 Metro Police vehicles with 10 officers and 1 SAPS vehicles. 

With the assistance of the above key institutions, the event went very smooth.

 On the 31 August 2013, Central Gauteng Athletics is taking two teams of girls under 14 years to Pretoria for Interprovincial Competition.

There are 6 girls in each team and 5 girls on each team are products of Pick n Pay Junior Road Series. The series’ results have been the top priority in terms of the team selection criteria.

As a province, we’re very proud to actually see the growth in these Pick n Pay series and the seriousness that is shown by our promising young athletes said Boyce Mfuneko Joko, province’s Development Manager. 

The next Pick n Pay Junior race will be held at Diepsloot, Akani Sports on the 21 September 2013.
