Central Gauteng Athletics teamed up with The Slow Mag Marathon event to host the 2015 provincial Half Marathon Championships this coming Sunday, 26 April 2015. A proud association with the Benoni Northerns athletics club for this event, which took place at Benoni Northerns Sports Grounds. The 21.1km marathon event commenced at 06h30.
It was a relatively flat route through the suburbs of Benoni which allowed runners to post good times. Cornelia Joubert who was female champion 2014 took the title again this year at 76.23. Philemon Mathiba is the 2015 male champ at the time of 66.00
The race was used by Central Gauteng Athletics to select the provincial team that will represent the province at the SA Championships, on the 25th of July 2015. The annual ASA 21.1km championship event will be held in Port Elizabeth, under the following qualifying times criteria:
- Men- Junior 1h20; Senior 1h10; 40+1h15; 50+ 1h20; 60+ 1h25
- Women- Junior 1h30; Senior 1h20; 40+1h25; 50+ 1h30; 60+ 1h40
Central Gauteng Athletics Race Walking Commission will also hosted the 3rd race walking league event incorporated with the Slow Mag marathon. The race walking 10km event which started at 6h40 at the Benoni Northerns Sports Grounds.
After the passing of Frik Vermaak who was a dedicated advocate of race walking and the Vice Chairperson of the CGA race walking commission, the commission had declared the league event in honour of Frik Vermaak and his contribution to racewalking in the province.
