This Mandela day, Central Gauteng Athletics has committed itself to giving a helping hand to Pumla School for The Severely Mentally Handicapped in Orlando West, Soweto on Monday, 18 July 2016 from 10h00 to 14h00. This is after one of our top athlete, Tebogo Masehla saw it fit that CGA family ploughs back to the community as part of the Mandela Day initiative. Together with athlete’s commission and CGA management this was well received and hope to have many more of such initiatives.
Pumla School for The Severely Mentally Handicapped is a school based in Orlando West, up the street from Vilakazi street, the late former President Mandela’ house. The school caters for a total of 345 learners with different mental disability. Meeting up with the schools’ management, we saw how much passion they have to work with these kids. Although they have some disability, they are still gifted in their own right and have the right to true happiness like any other kids.
This is why Central Gauteng Athletics felt so strongly in working with the school. We identified a few areas that need help and on the day we will help revive the schools gardening system, clean the school premises, and prepare a snack for the children on the day. We also do welcome donations such as canned food, clothes and blankets to give to the some of the needy kids of Pumla School for The Severely Mentally Handicapped. Donations may be brought into the CGA offices or dropped off at the upcoming cross country league in Dorothy Nyembe park, Soweto.
