CGA Running a 2nd Cross Country League in Dobsonville

The Cross Country 2019 Season powered by MTN Foundation maintained the standard following the successful first league event held at Sam Ntuli, as the second league proceed over this past Saturday 11 May 2019, at Dobsonville Communal Hall in Soweto.

The event was well supported by athletes who are determined to showcase greater performance for the season. The evidence was witnessed with the first race of the day for the under 8 category, boys and girls. Ntando Ngwenya from Harambe Athletics Club, the host club took advantage of home ground and finished first in the time of 00:04:29. The girls under 9 years category were won by a very promising Brooks Tyron of Marais Viljoen Athletics Club in the time of 00:08:36. The first league winner of the under 13 Girls event defended her 1st position that is Dieketseng Motsoeneng from Runzone Athletics Club.

One of the awaited events of the day was the junior men 8km race which was dominated and won by Caleb Beukes of Boxer Athletics Club in the of 28:43. Farita Zwane’s exceptional performance in the 4km race was one of the highlight events of the day, the Thembisa Athletics Club based athlete finished in the time of 00:40:45 to win the Senior Women 4km race.

The last event which is the Senior 10km race has been labelled as the most challenging event at our leagues with huge competitive athletes. At this league, it was no different however the athletes’ comment was that the course was very exciting. The event was won by Xolisa Tyali of from Nedbank Athletics Club in the time of 00:34:14. After an exciting and competitive between him and Namakoe Nkhasi of Nedbank A.C who settled for the second position.

In an interview with Steven Khanyile the chairperson of Cross Country he said the performance is really encouraging that this year we will have a very strong provincial team for the National Championships”. Athletes are required to run any 4 out of 8 league events plus the CGA Championships in order to be considered for selection.

Ulinda Athletics Club will host the next CGA Cross Country league at Kwathema Sports Complex on the 18 May 2019.
