Zet Sinqe Series sets streets of Kagiso alight

2019-10-03

The first of the two Zet Sinqe Series events were hosted in near perfect conditions on Sunday 25 August outside the Kagiso Sports complex. After the 5km fun run, it was down to the real reason why the Zithulele Sinqe Foundation in conjunction with Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the event, the Street Mile for age groups U13 right through to U19.

There were some impressive performances in particular in the U13 boys and girls where Temoso Modisamongwe and Khentsoni Mthombo ran 5:17 and 5:46 respectively.

“We are delighted by some of the results and the excitement from the youngsters,” said CGA General Manager, Mandla Radebe. “This is what we want to see.”

A total of around 100 youngsters raced in the various age categories in what was another coup, full road closure for a street mile.

“This is what my father wanted to see and do, this is why we started the Zithulele Sinqe Foundation,” enthused Zintle Sinqe with the broadest smile on her face. “We know we have lots of work to do, but the cornerstone has been laid and we are really excited about what has happened today.”

The final race of the day, the U19 Men had the supporters jumping up and down as it became a race to the line which in the end was won, just, by Ntokozo Sibiya, edging Prince Meabela by 2 seconds, 4:36 to 4:38.

The Zithulele Sinqe Foundation has as its vision and objective the identifying and nurturing of young athletic talent with a long term view to not only develop athletic talent but also to assist in the furthering of the education of this young talent. To this end, the Foundation and CGA are making contact with schools who have athletics bursaries on offer and asking that they send their scouts to the races so that the talent could hopefully find a home to nurture both the athletic and the academic side of the youngsters.

The next event is at Orange Farm on Saturday 12 October.
