Central Gauteng Athletics Track and Field season kicked off with a bang on Saturday, 14 January 2023 at Germiston Stadium.
It was a day of fairly warm to high temperatures, yet athletes came out in numbers to compete. The very impressive turnout at the 1st meeting provides the federation a positive impression that this is going to be one exciting season for our athletes and spectators.
The day started off with race walking which counted as the second race walking league for 2023. The CGA race walking committee chairperson Nthatisi Mokhele also took part in the Final Senior women 10km event claiming the silver position with Marissa Swanepoel taking the gold position.
One of the exciting events of the day was the senior women 5000m where Cian Oldknow of Murray and Roberts maintaining the lead from the 1st lap to the finish line clocking 16:31.79. In second position it was Lebo Phalula of Boxer who finished in the time 17:07.70. Kefilwe Molefe of Colossus secured the 3rd place in the time 18:20.33. The above-mentioned event was combined with the U20 Girls where the CGA’s 2022 Junior Athlete of the Year winner Naledi Makgatha claiming the 1st position in the amazing time 18:43.67.
Senior Men and Boys U20 5000m event was also another showstopper of the day, as we saw great event. In the boys U20 category, Sibusiso Msibi of Tembisa Athletics Club gave CGA’s 2022 Most Promising Athlete of the year tittle winner Johannes Morepe of Murray and Roberts a strong challenge as he claimed the 1st position in the time 15:21.91 and Morepe clocking in 2nd in his respective time of 15:46.49.
In other highlights, Oluchi Ndubueze who competed as a sub youth in 2022 season and now in the junior category ,claimed a gold position in the girls U16 100m (12.90), a gold position in the girls U16 200m (26.23) and a silver position in the girls U16 Long Jump (5.15)this past weekend.Oluchi is the name to remember as she is proving to be the rising star. In her post event interview, she indicated that she is ready to collect more gold medals this season.
CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks says she looks forward to seeing more athletes competing this season in order for the province to have a very strong team at the national championships.
