Central Gauteng Athletics hosted its 3rd league meeting on Saturday, 4 February 2023 at Germiston Stadium.
This league meeting was graced by most of our elite athletes whom some of them are preparing for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships which will be taking place later this month in Australia.
Over 1 000 athletes entered for this league which was supported by athletes from our sister provinces to test their performances and readiness for the National Championships which are scheduled late in March 2023.
The day took off with field events and amongst the great events witnessed in the morning was the Boys U16 Shotput where Keanu Nel of UJ claimed gold position with an amazing throw of 15.67, in the silver medal position Dewald Prinsloo of SBAC with a distance of 14.90 and bronze position went to Marno White of Origins with a distance of 13.70.
Another phenomenal event was the 400m senior Men which Boikanyo Motlhamme of UJ dominated from the start to secure a gold position clocking an amazing time 0:48.79. Motlhamme has shown great fitness in all previous meetings this season. Posing a great competition to Motlhamme was Siyabonga Mtsweni who finished second in the time of 0:48:83 and the 3rd place in the time 0:49.70 was Keaton Ryan from Germiston Callies.
The 5000m senior men event provided an all athletics experience with runners giving us a showstopper race of the day. In the starting line, 13 athletes were CGA’s considered elite athletes like Maxime Chaumeton who displayed a stunning performance with his stable run to secure the 1st position in the time of 13:57.76, Precious Mashele of Boxer also displayed great form clocking 13:57.84 to secure the 2nd position. In the 3rd place was the rising star of the province Nicholas Seoposengwe in the time 14:05.58. Nicholas gave Ryan Mphahlele a great competition as Mphahlele ended up settling for a fourth position clocking 14:28.10.
The day was dominated by middle distance with another track event that got spectators up on the grandstands was the u16 girls 300m hurdles where Caylen Jenkins of Nories dominated the event in her amazing time 44.04 followed by her teammate Monique Smit claiming the 2nd position in the time 49.54. Zoe Oosthuizen from Monnas finished 3rd in the time 50.93.
This meeting was also graced by CGA President Steven Khanyile and the CGA Athletes commission chairperson Zongamele Dyubeni who were impressed by the performances of our athletes.
