Central Gauteng Athletics successfully hosted its last 2023 Track and Field league meeting on Saturday, 25 February 2023 at Germiston Stadium.

The season covered the age groups from youth to masters with the last league supported by over 1000 athletes in a quest to qualify for the National Championships scheduled late in March 2023.

On Saturday, the most fascinating showstopper event was the 100m senior women and men events which captured the attention of spectators. The senior women 100m event was dominated by CGA’s 2022 Senior Female of the year, Carina Horn of Backtrack. Horn gave her fellow competitors clocking an amazing time of 11.51 to secure the gold position. Securing the silver position was Joviale Mbisha in the time of 12.10 and claiming the bronze position was NWU’s Amiel Rothman in 12.49. The Senior Men 100m was also on fire with national record holder and CGA’s 2022 Senior Male athlete of the Year, Akani Simbine of Backtrack giving us a showstopper event. Simbine claimed the gold position in an amazing time of 10:18 with Tsebo Matsoso of UJ claiming the silver position crossing the finish line in the time 10:47. The podium was closed by Duke Kuali of UJ to secure his bronze position clocking 10.51.

The Senior Men 1500m which featured Sibusiso Msibi of Tembisa and Jayde Rosslee of Boxer battling for the top spot was a thrilling race to watch. The two athletes who represented the country at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships showed great fitness and confidence with Msibi claiming the 1st position in an outstanding time of 03:53.05 and Rosslee settling for 2nd position in the time 03:58.15 and striving for the third position with a finish of 03:58.97 was Mmuso Fotoi of Collossus.

We witnessed a fairly good competition in the senior men 5000m event with 2022 SA 10km champion, Andries Sesedi taking lead to clock 14:31.06 winning the gold medal position. Sesedi was followed by Kabelo Melamu of Murray and Roberts taking the 2nd position in the time of 14:42.08. The3rd place went to Born2Run, Marko Bucurizza who finished in the time of 14:48.20. In the senior women 5000m, Cacisile Sosibo of Boxer who was also part of the SA team to the 2023 World Cross Country Championships ran a fair race clocking 16:53.28 and in the second postion was Ntshatiseng Molefe of UJ who finished in the time 18:30:92.

All the way from Botswana dominating the Senior Men 400m event with a time of 0:46.65 was Cliffton Meshack followed by Simon Khuzwayo of ISMO in the time of 0:47.94.  In third position, Kabelo Moholobela of Warriors of West sealed the podium clocking 0:48.66.

In the field events, the UJ jumpers took a centre stage with Mpho Links and Karabo Satekge securing gold positions in the Senior Men High Jump and Long Jump respectively. Links jumped an incredible height of 2:20 followed by his team mate Louwrens Justins with 1:95 jump and securing the third position was Ntandoyethu Ndaba with his 1:90 jump. In the exciting Long Jump event Zarck Visser had to settle for the 2nd position in a jump of 7:67.

CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks shared words of appreciation to all athletes, coaches and clubs who supported the commission this season. We are also grateful of the support from our neighbouring provinces and athletes from countries such as Mozambique, Botswana, Lesotho and Namibia. As the province we are very proud to have our leagues attracting international athletes.

We are now preparing for the Provincial Championships which will be held on the 10 and 11 March 2023 with the National Championships at the end of March 2023.
