Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the 2nd league of 2024 CGA Cross Country season on Saturday, 4 May 2024 at the Randfontein Golf Course in collaboration with Mohlakeng Athletics Club.
A fairly warm day with over 1 000 athletes came out to take part at this new venue which had a lot of promise to be one of the best venues for cross country.
Amongst the 1st races of the day was the (beginners) boys and girls under 8 years running a 1km distance, which Simphiwe Magagula of Warriors of West won the boys race in the time 04:11. The second place was secured by Mfundo Songololo of Ekhaya clocking 04:26 and settling for the third position was Abedi Youna of Warriors of west in the time of 04:31.
Dominique Broughton of Benoni Northerns finished first to secure her gold position in the girslt under 8 event clocking 4:30, Naomi Mala of 32Gi settled for the silver position crossing the finish line in the time of 4:50. The bronze position went to Owethu Maluleke of Warriors off West in the time of 5:10.
The girls U16 event saw Polite Mbokane of UJ dominate the event to finish first in the time of 17:06. Reamogetse Ragedi of Boxer claimed the second position clocking 17:50. In third position was Ragedi teammate Jenna Westermeyer in the time of 17:57
The senior men 10km event kept spectators on their feet as Sibusiso Msibi and Letsepa Madume battled it out on the cross country perfect Randfontein course. This was one exciting event with so much anticipation as to who was going to win the race. The two UJ athletes delivered exceptional performance with Msibi claiming the gold position in the time of 33:28 and Madume settling for the silver position in the time of 33:46. In the colours of Nedbank Paseka Mosehla also gave his all to finish 3rd in the time of 34:00.
This year’s Cross Country season consists of 8 leagues which has been increased by 2 leagues from the 2023 season with the hope of giving more competition opportunity to our athletes said CGA Cross Country chairperson Val Brentano at the post event interview. She further encouraged athletes to register on time so that we can ensure that all the logistics are planned for accordingly.
