Central Gauteng Athletics successfully hosted the 3rd Cross Country league on the 18 May 2024 at Kwa-Thema Sports Complex in collaboration with Waterfall City Athletics Club. The league was greatly supported with the season gaining momentum with over 1200 athletes in attendance.
One of the highly anticipated race was the senior men 2km race which saw great performance by Nicholas Whittaker of UJ who dominated the race to secure the 1st position in the time 05:57. The second position went to Thabo Masina of Waterfall City clocking 06:06 and the bronze podium position was taken by Kamogelo Masemola of Old Eds finishing in the time of 06:13.
The senior women 2km race was won by Nadia Lombard of Boxer clocking 08:00. The second position went to Pabelelo Ramatladi of Mamepe Striders in the time of 08:25. Elvirah Maphosa of Waterfall took the 3rd position in the time of 09:36.
It was evident that the province was on the right development path with a number of development athletes who were in attendance. These development age categories did not disappoint in terms of performance as we saw, Tyran Brooks of Boxer in the 4km boys under 15 race continuing his dominance this season clocking 12:57. Brooks has been consistent over the years and with no doubt that he will secure a medal for the province at the South African Championships this year. Finishing 2nd was Tshepang Mahlangu of Mamepe Striders in the time of 13:35. In the 3rd position was Mahlangu’s teammate Thabiso Mokgotla in the time 13:45.
The girls 4km under 15 race with over 30 girls battling it out with Heymans Katelin of 32Gi conquering the race in the time of 14:38. Heymans has been consistent in her performance since the start of the season and it seems she is in the right path of her athletics journey. In second position went to Chanel Groenewald of Boxer clocking 16:08 and settling for the 3rd position was Onkgopotse Sejamane of Waterfall City in the time of 16:26.
CGA Cross Country commission chairperson, Val Brentano thanked all the clubs for the on the increasing support for cross country since the beginning of the 2024 season. She also thanked the athletes and coaches for registering on time on the entry platform as it ensured that the results are published on time.
