CGA marks halfway through the 2024 Cross Country Season

Central Gauteng Athletics successfully hosted its 4th Cross Country Cross Country league on the Saturday, 3 June 2023 at Dobsonville Community Hall in collaboration with Harambe Athletics Club.

In the well supported league with over 1500 athletes participated on the day. One of the highlight was the junior women 2km event which was dominated by the UJ athletes securing the 1st two positions of the event, Lebogang Nkanyani taking the 1st position in the time of 08:21 and 2nd position going to Khunedi Mashishi in the time of 8:23. The 3rd position went to Camryn De Meyer of Benoni High clocking 08:48.

The Junior men 8km event was another exciting event to watch being won by Zenzile Pheko of Kopano clocking 27:34, with his teammate Kutlwano Molotsi coming in second clocking 29.05 and settling for the 3rd position was Thlolo Diseko of Scaw in the time of 29:18.

All eyes turned to the 10km open men and women race which is classified as the main event and literally the last event of the day.  A total of 51 athletes at the race start line with a number of the province’s elite runner’s part of the race. Chris Mhlanga of Boxer dominating the senior men race with a very relaxed pace finishing 1st in the time of 33:43. In the 2nd place it was his teammate Dylan Van Der Merwe clocking 34:12 and the 3rd place in the time of 35:02 went to Sakhile Sangweni of Gallopers.

The women race title was also up for grabs as the known elite female athletes where on provincial duty at the National Half Marathon Championships. Faith Mabhena of UJ clocking 44:06 to secure the gold position and in second place also from UJ was Noluthando Mampane claiming the silver position in the time of 44:18. To close off the podium was Shokane Kgopotso of UJ clocking 47:38.

CGA Cross Country commission chairperson, Val Brentano thanked all the clubs for the on the increasing support for cross country since the beginning of the 2024 season. She also thanked the athletes and coaches for registering on time on the entry platform as it ensured that the results are published on time.
