Central Gauteng Athletics successfully hosted the 6th Cross Country league on the 4th July 2024 at Westonaria Sports Complex in collaboration with Warriors of West.
On the day we saw great competition amongst the boys U11 in their 3km race which Alunathi Bali of Warriors of West lead and secured the 1st position in the time of 10:35. The well deserved 2nd position was Philani Luthuli of Boxer clocking 10:37 and settling for the 3rd position was Joshua Nadden of Upcoming Track Stars in the time of 11:24.
The development age groups continues to deliver stunning performances at cross country with another exciting event to watch which was the Girls U15 4km won by Katelin Heymans of 31Gi clocking 15:24 and Kelly-Lynn Barkley of Irun settling for the second spot in the time of 15:29. Ongkgopotse Sejanamane of Waterfall City finishing 3rd in the time of 15:51.
The Junior Men 2km event was yet another showstopper event as they battled it out on a flat but challenging Westonaria course that kept spectators on their feet. Keagan Botha of Nedbank dominated this race from start to finish clocking 6:15 followed by Esak Ngubane of Lesedi Ac in the time of 6:33 and in the 3rd position went to Matthew Mackay of Benoni crossing the finish line in the time of 06:36.
As we are building up to the Provincial Championships taking place on the 17th of August 2024 with only 2 leagues remaining, all athletes are reminded that submission of South African ID document or birth certificate copies must be done not later than 14th of August 2024. No ID documents or Birth Certificates will be accepted at the Provincial Championships.
CGA Cross Country commission chairperson, Val Brentano thanked all the clubs for the on the increasing support for cross country since the beginning of the 2024 season. She also reminded athletes that in order to be considered for selection to represent the province at National Championships athletes must run any 4 out of the 8 leagues plus CGA Provincial Championships.
