Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the final league of the 2025 CGA Track and Field season this past Saturday, 22 February 2025 at Germiston Stadium.
Over 1000 athletes participated in the league with the aim to better their times in order to qualify for the National Track and Field Championships. We continued to witness great support from our sister provinces.
One of the thrilling performances had to be the Senior Men 400m Hurdles where an interesting swift win by Sabelo Dhlamini was witnessed clocking 48.73, missing the World Championships qualifying time by 0.2 seconds. He has recorded his personal best time and fastest world lead in 400m hurdles this athletics season. Dhlamini’s time is recorded as one of the top 10 in 400m Hurdles fastest times in South Africa.
CGA’s well known 400m sensation, Shirley Nekhubui dominated the senior women 400m event clocking 52:51 securing her gold medal position. As a province we anticipate exceptional performances from Nekhubui this season and we are very confident that she will defend her national title. The silver medal position was her teammate Precious Molepo clocked 54.74 with the bronze position going to Marlene Van Der Linde of Boxer in the time of 59.23.
The senior men High jump saw UJ dominate the event with the soaring sensation, Mpxho Links claiming the 1st position jumping 2.17, his teammate Justin Louwrens came second clearing 2.05 and in third position also in the UJ colors was Nyelele Kalteho with a 2.00 jump.
Amongst the favorite events of the day was the senior men 5000m event which had a trail of more than 30 athletes on the starting line. This event kept spectators on their toes as we saw a tight competition between the provinces finest talent which included Phemelo Ntoe, Boikanyo Motlhamme, Sibusiso Msibi and Zenzile Pheko. Unfortunately, Ntoe experienced a sprain during his race causing him to pull out of the race leaving the battle to the three gentleman that gave us a show. The race was decided in the last lap with Boikanyo Motlhamme winning the race clocking 14:35.01. Motlhamme’s teammate Sibusiso Msibi settled for second position in the time of 14.37.93 and the third position went to Zenzile Pheko of Kopano finishing in the time of 14:46.90.
We now turn the focus to the 2025 Track and Field Youth to Senior Provincial Championships which will be taking place over two days on the 14 and 15 March 2025. The CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks indicated that it is the duty of the province to ensure that our athletes are well prepared for the National Championships and other major international championships. It is all systems go for the Provincial Championships which will be held at UJ Athletics Stadium, currently the commission is finalising a very exciting championships programme which will be communicated in the next few days.
