CGA hosted the 1st Cross Country League at Kwa-Thema Stadium

Central Gauteng Athletics successfully launched its 2025 Cross Country season hosting league 1 this past weekend at Kwa-Thema Stadium in Collaboration with Waterfall City Athletics Club. The athletes, coaches and supporters of cross-country discipline attended in numbers, and they were thrilled by the start to the season.

The day opened with the Girls Under-13 4km race, setting a high-energy tone for the rest of the events. Young athletes from across the province competed in various age categories, displaying remarkable endurance and competitive spirit.

Girls U14, 4km event saw Chelsea van Dyk of Benoni Northerns lead the race to clock 15:12, in second position was Zanele Mzizi of Langaville Athletics finishing 15:14, in 3rd position was Natalie Strydom of Kempies clocking 15:53.

An interesting competition was witnessed in the U13 Boys 4km race where Indiphile Myeki led the event to the 1st position in the time of 14:16. Sanele Mthonjeni of Boxer claimed the second position in the time of 14:39 with Matthew Pietroiusti of Irun in 3rd position clocking 14:48.

The day concluded with the Senior Men and Women 10km event, the most anticipated race on the program. Dylan Van Der Merwe in the colours of Boxer dominated the Men’s 10km to cross the finish line first in 31:35. In second position was Mzwakhe of UJ finishing in the time of 32:10 and in 3rd position was Kwanele Lefa of Mamepe Striders clocking 32:12.

In the Senior Women 10km leading the ladies was Welma Nkuna representing Malcom X to clock 39:18 in second position was Nicole Swanepoel of Boxer in the time of 40:37 her teammate Andiswa Nkomo settled for the third position in the time of 42:48.

“The turnout and level of performances by the athletes considering that it was the first league exceeded our expectations,” said Val Brentano, CGA Cross Country Chairperson.

This year’s Cross Country season consists of 6 leagues and League 1 has set the stage for an exciting season of cross country competition. The level of talent and discipline we are seeing at this early stage in the season is impressive.
