Central Gauteng Athletics, in collaboration with Warriors of the West Athletics Club, successfully hosted the 5th League Meeting of the 2025 Cross Country Season on Saturday, 12 July 2025, at the Westonaria Sports Complex.
The league attracted an impressive number of athletes across various age groups and clubs, creating an atmosphere filled with energy, endurance, and athletic excellence. The day highlighted the continued growth of the sport in the province and the importance of nurturing talent from grassroots to elite levels.
In the Youth Women 2km event, Nicola Smith of Ekhaya claimed first place with a strong and consistent run clocking 07:15. She was followed by Kelly Barkley representing Nedbank in the time 07:56, Tiyani Fourie of Nedbank secured third place in the time 08:04. The Girls Under 14 4km race saw a dominant performance from Boipelo Maroga of Nedbank who took top honours finishing the race in the time 16:12. Milan Botha from Helpmekaar came in second in the time 16:19, while Kesha Lee Nel from Kempies earned a well-fought third place in the time 16:39.
In the Boys Under 16 6km race, Junior Azania Noah from Warriors surged to the front to claim victory clocking 19:09. Tyran Brooks of Boxer followed in second crossing the finish line at 19:23, with Tsepa Ntlatla of Diepsloot off the podium in third in 19:29. The Men U23 4km event featured a fast and tactical race, with Lesile Mokoena from Phantane finishing first clocking 11:56. Sibusiso Msibi of UJ took second position clocking 12:06, while his teammate Enock Bokaba claimed third place in the time 12:25
CGA Cross Country Chairperson Val Brentano shared her pride in the athletes’ achievements “This league was more than just a competition — it was a display of grit, commitment, and the promising future of South African distance running. We commend every athlete who competed and every official who helped make this possible.”
CGA extends heartfelt thanks to all volunteers, officials, clubs, and parents who played a role in making the event a success. With only one league remaining in the season, the momentum continues as we approach the 2025 CGA Cross Country Provincial Championships. Athletes are hereby reminded to submit their SA ID/Birth Certificate before the 11 August 2025.
