CGA wishes all ladies a Happy Women’s Month

Dear Club Secretary,

Central Gauteng Athletics wishes all women of our province a happy Women’s month of August. In celebrating August as Women’s month, Central Gauteng Athletics Women Committee will be hosting a number of great women’s initiatives aimed at empowering women in athletics.

In June 2021, the CGA Women Committee launched a personal hygiene project which is aimed at collecting hygiene packs for young underprivileged women and distributing them to various beneficiaries within the province. There has been a positive response from some of our clubs and we thank you for your contribution.

The Hygiene Packs may include the following items:

  • Sanitary Towels
  • Face cloths
  • Bath soap
  • Tampons
  • Body cream
  • Roll-on Deodorant
  • Deodorant
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrushes

The dropbox will be located at the registration and screening area at all CGA events including Cross Country events and at the CGA Office at Germiston Stadium. Looking forward to receiving a donation from you for a good cause.

We would like to challenge all clubs to go on a drive to increase women participation in athletics both on and off the field within your club.

Women have excelled in every facet of life and athletics is not an exception. CGA salutes and celebrates the glorious achievements of our sportswomen and their undying spirit of competing to win.

Happy Women’s Month and Happy Women’s Day.

Kind regards,

CGA Women’s Committee

Passing of Bruce Mpela

Bruce Mpela

Athletics family, on the 8th of January 2021 we have received the sad news of the passing of Bruce Mpela. The late Mpela was a member of the Kagiso Striders Athletics Club and one of our renowned National Technical Official and International Starter. The late Mpela served as the deputy chairperson of CGA Technical Officials Committee for many years. He did not only apply his knowledge of athletics rules at athletics event but was willing to share his knowledge through lecturing of national courses and his involvement in programmes aimed at developing technical officials in our province.

His experiences in officiating were vast which included judging at the highest level in Race Walking and the most qualified National Track and Field starter in the country. His dedication to athletics, in particular, officiating and creating a fair play environment for athletes was immense. He has represented the province with pride throughout the world. We salute this legend of our sport and he will be sorely missed by the Athletics Family.

On behalf of the Central Gauteng Athletics management and the athletics family, we would like to convey our sincere condolences to Mpela family, Technical Officials colleagues and Kagiso Strides Athletics Club members. He will be dearly missed by the entire athletics family. May his soul rest in peace.

The Funeral Service will be held as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 13 January 2021

Venue: 23 Currie Street, Roodepoort

Time: 08h00 to 10h00

It with great sadness that due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdown regulations, the athletics family may be deprived to send off this great official of our province and most importantly to share memories of his contributions to CGA and Athletics as a whole. Central Gauteng Athletics together with Technical Officials is planning to host a drive-through Memorial on Tuesday 12 January 2021 at his home between 14h00 and 16h00. We will have a dropbox for the messages of support to the family.
