Central Gauteng Athletics Road Running commission is very grateful that some clubs have creatively hosted road races in the past few months, be it virtually or in a hybrid physically race route format. Let’s support these virtual races to keep the road running under the pandemic’s current environment.

In the recent vaccination programme update by the government, we have noted that possible herd immunity of South Africa is targeted before the end of 2021, we are hopeful that this will assist us in going back to physical road races with a reasonable number of participants for the 2022 fixtures. We will be sharing the 2022 draft fixtures shortly.

Some runs are not organised under the auspices of clubs and not sanctioned by CGA, ASA, and/or the Government. We need to ensure that all our athletics events are run under an athletics structure so that we can ensure COVID-19 compliance, but most importantly, accountability for the sport of athletics.

Illegal runs also have negative implications for runners, including invalidating the athlete’s insurance cover. We, therefore, request that clubs inform and educate their athletes about the risks of participating in such runs.
