CGA 3rd Cross Country League in Springs

The CGA 3rd Cross Country league powered by MTN Foundation was welcomed by Ulinda Athletic Club at Kwathema Sports Complex, Springs last weekend, Saturday 18 May 2019.

This league event was filled with an immense number of athletes coming through to better there’re performances compare to the past two initial leagues. We had also experienced a lot of support from the community of Kwathema who came in numbers to support the league.

The day was kicked off with the 1km event for the athletes under the age of 8 which saw Sihle Nyezi from Simunye Global Athletics Club coming out victorious in a time line of 00:04:16. Dieketseng Motsoeneng from Runzone Athletics Club and Itumeleng Seboa from Colossus Athletics Club dominated 3km race in the 13 and 11 age category respectively. Dieketseng maintained her number one spot from the start of the season and this time finishing in the time of 00:11:34. In an interview with Itumeleng Seboa, he indicated that he was upset about his performance during the second league but he was happy to reclaim his number one spot at this 3rd league.

2018 National Champion Reaglehile representing Nedbank Running Club won the boys under 14 category with an exceptional performance from start to finish. When interviewed he said that today’s victory confirms that he is ready to defend the title at the national championships.

Antonia Brown from Jansen Athletics Club based in Kempton Park running his 2nd league outshines his fellow competitors in a second lap, in the 6km race, Boys under 17 to settle race in a time of 00:57:38.

Hollywood Athletics Club claimed their first victory in the Senior Men 10km race by Ntshindiso Phakathi stepping to the finish line in a time of 00:29:52. The club is promising to boost development in the province and we are expecting more great results in the future leagues.

Steven Khanyile, chairperson of Cross Country in an interview indicated that “the performance is really encouraging this year as we are looking at sending a very strong provincial team for the National Championships later in the year”. Athletes are required to run any 4 out of 8 league events plus the CGA Championships in order to be considered for selection.

The next league event will be held at Chris Hani Sports Complex in Orange Farm hosted by Simunye Athletics Club on the 1 June 2019. We hope to see you there.
