CGA Host 2021 Track and Field Championships

Central Gauteng Athletics Track and Field will be hosting the Provincial Championships on 27 March 2021 at Boksburg Stadium.

Following remarkable 5 leagues hosted since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, has displayed exceptional performance from athletes. The championships are expected to be very exciting as athletes are in good shape to compete and seek qualification for the national championships which are scheduled to take place on the 7 to 10 April 2021 in Paarl.

One of the rising stars, Lythe Pillay who ran an outstanding time 21:17 in 200m at CGA 2nd Track and Field Meeting will face off with Moss Mvuyo with 21:65 this season.

The highlight of the day will be the battle of long-distance runners between Demond Mokgobu, Mzazi Gladwin, Ryan Mphahlele, and Simon Sibeko challenging a distance of 5,000m senior men event. In 5,000m senior women, all eyes will be stared at Gene Coetzee with a curiosity to maintain her title over the Phalula twins, following her victory in the previous season at CGA provincial championships clocking a time of 17:17.09.

In the field event, this time Jason van Rooyen of UJ will be eager to take on the victory against his teammate Kyle Blignaut in the senior men’s shot put. Blignaut, who dominated throughout the CGA leagues against his training partner, including his winning of last week ASA Athletix Invitational Meeting with a heave distance of 20.85m. The athletes will be aiming to qualify for the Olympic Games later this year.

The battle of UJ training partners between Johnson Cheswell and Divan Manuel continues this weekend, this comes after Cheswell won a Long Jump Senior Men at Athletix Invitational Meeting hosted by Athletic South Africa on Tuesday. This time Manuel aims to improve his personal best of 8.02m which landed him in the second position against his rival Cheswell who leapt to 8.14m.

CGA 2019 Award winner Dane Roets will be showing off her fine talent in the U19 junior women discus event as she makes a return on the field for the first time this season.
