CGA hosted the 2019 Cross Country Championships in Kagiso

Central Gauteng Athletics held the 2019 Cross Country Provincial Championships powered by MTN Foundation over this past Saturday, on the 17 August 2019 at Kagiso Sports Complex.

The Championships witnessed great support by both athletes and spectators on the day with a turnout of more than 1500 athletes taking part in provincial championships.

The day commenced with sub-veteran and veteran men setting the tone for the day running a distance of 8km. Vincent Seng of Bedfordview Athletics Club claimed the first victory of the day in a time of 00:26:04. In the women veteran category, Tebogo Mokgosinyane of Nedbank Athletics Club took the first position running the 4km race clocking 00:15:28. She celebrated her 6th victory in cross country this season.

Lodirile Athletics Club dominated in the girls under 10 category seeing Ayanda Njodi winning her race in the time of 00:07:46. One of the highlight and more competitive event in cross country is the 10km senior race, Precious Mashele of Olifantsfontein Athletics Club claimed the victory clocking 00:30:35. He is looking forward to being selected to defend his national title at the national championships at the beginning of next month.

Farida Zwane of Tembisa Athletics Club celebrated the Women’s Month in style following her exceptional performance in the 10km Senior Women race to finish in the time of 00:37:28. His marked the 4th win this season for Zwane and we will be expecting the same performance at the national championships.

The championships were concluded with the 4km senior event, which to some extent is regarded as the crowd puller because of the pace the athletes’ performance at the race. Nicole van der Merwe of UJ Athletics Club and Maxime Chaameton of Olifantsfontein Athletics Club dominated their respective races and clocking 00:14:31 and 00:11:28 respectively.

At a post-event interview, CGA Cross Country Chairperson Steven Khanyile firstly thanked MTN Foundation for the support throughout the season which he marks it as one of the very successful seasons. He confirmed that the province will be sending a strong team which consist of top six athletes to represent the province at the 2019 Cross Country National Championships. He concluded by thanking all the stakeholders that contributed to the success of the season.

Over the years CGA has performed exceptionally well at the National Championships and yet again the preparations at the Provincials Championships is a clear indication of expected great performances anticipated at the National Championships which will be held at Uitsig High School in Pretoria on the 7th September 2019.

The Team announcement will be done should with a team meeting scheduled for the 25 August 2019.
