Central Gauteng Athletics hosts the 3rd league of 2021 Cross Country season in partnership with Tsogo Sun Hotels and National Lotteries Commission on Saturday, 19 June 2021 at Chris Hani Sports Complex in Orange Farm.

The adjusted event programme with the revised starting times of 10h00 to allow for COVID-19 compliance was welcomed by all the athletes on the day. Elihle Nyezi of United Stars and Luan Wohlfahrt of Hoerskool Noordheuwel displayed great performances in the 1km event running side by side in the time of 04:48 respectively. Nyezi remains unbeaten this season registering her 3rd victory consecutively over this past weekend. Joseph Ntoloane of Simunye Global had a home ground advantage in the distance of a 2km race to dominate the senior men category clocking the time of 00:05:51.

One of the favourite events was the senior men 4km race which saw Marko Bucarizza running a brilliant race in the time of 12:06 with Kabelo Melamo settling for the second place in the time of 12:12. Bucarizza said in his post-event interview that he would love to see more South African athletes qualify for the Olympic Games and he thinks the foundation that CGA is creating will benefit athletes who try to get there.

The day’s last event was packed full of excitement, which saw Kabelo Seboko running bravely to prove his quality in the 10km senior men race. Seboko continued with his fine form and claimed the gold position in a time of 31:45 to add to his previous win this season. In the post-race interview, Seboko confirmed that it was a tough race especially in the last two laps but he was grateful to maintain his position to the end of the race. In the Senior Women 10km race, Rachel Leistra of UJ Athletics Club secured the first position in the time of 39:52.

Central Gauteng Athletics Cross Country Chairperson Steven Khanyile said the revised league programme introduced following President Ramaphosa latest address was to assist us to better adhere to protocol especially in reducing the number of athletes at the venue at any given time. We are happy that the plan worked very well on the day. We would like to thank the athletes, coaches, club coordinators and parents for adhering to the protocols.
