2020-09-05

Dear Club Secretaries

Trust that all Central Gauteng Athletics members are well and safe during the Nationwide lockdown.

1. Safe Returning to Club Activities

Following the recent announcement regarding the adjustment of lockdown restrictions to Alert level 2 and the Sports and Recreation gazette published on the 28 August 2020 by Minister of Sports and Recreation Nathi Mthethwa. Central Gauteng Athletics has studied this and in consultation with Athletics South Africa club activities such as club training and time trials may resume under strict protocols and safety guidelines. Clubs are requested to adhere to the gathering regulations of people not exceeding 50.  We are finalising the guidelines document which we will be sharing with clubs as soon as it is concluded

We have also noted that the safety of runners when training has been compromised as a result of a rise in crime. We, therefore, request clubs to ensure the safety of runners by identifying safe routes for club runs and other club activities.

2. Approved Virtual Race Participation

Under the current alert level, events and races are still not allowed. We however working on a plan and engaging ASA on a plan to allow elite runners’ event within the current regulations. More information on this plan will be communicated once we receive a go-ahead from Athletics South Africa and the government on the possibility of hosting these elite events.

ASA circulate 34 clearly cautions members from taking part in unsanctioned virtual races. It is important that we remind clubs that virtual races that are not approved have negative implications to runners which includes invalidating the athlete’s insurance cover. We, therefore, request that you inform your members about this as we participate in the virtual race. We have attached the list of approved 2020 CGA Virtual races for easy reference.

3. CGA Online Registration System

We request that clubs continue to request athletes to register on the CGA online Athlete Registration System. This system will make the licensing process as smooth as possible for both CGA administration and clubs.  Therefore please ensure that your club and athletes are registered on the system.

We would like to thank the clubs that have registered on the CGA Athlete Registration system. As part of the athlete insurance it is very critical that Athletes are registered on the system and athlete registration forms are uploaded (this is important for insurance purposes).

The website address is www.cgaonline.co.za. Club chairperson or secretary will be the main club administrators, can access the club sections such as updating the club information tool. The user name will be linked to the cell phone number of the chairperson and secretary (see the attached manual and the list of all CGA clubs on the system linked below). Should you need any information, send your queries or inputs on the system.

4. Call for CGA Women’s’ and Disciplinary Committee Nominations

Just before the National Lockdown, Central Gauteng Athletics Board invited nominations of members to serve on the Women’s and Disciplinary Committees of Central Gauteng Athletics. The nominees will serve in the respective portfolios in each committee: chairperson, vice-chairperson and 3 additional members.

We would also like to highlight the following points in reference to the nominations:

  • Only clubs in good standing can nominate
  • Good standing will be determined by the affiliation status for 2020 and the number of permanent licenses taken (minimum permanent licenses per club is 25)
  • The nomination must be done on a club letterhead and accompanied by a short C.V of the nominee/s
  • The nomination must include the name, portfolio, permanent license number, club of the nominee/s
  • Nominated members must have a valid permanent license of Central Gauteng Athletics
  • Legal qualifications and background for Disciplinary Committee nominees will be an advantage

Unfortunately, we did not receive the required number of nominations for these respective committees. The Board has re-invited clubs to nominate as per Central Gauteng Athletics Constitution clause 17.5.

The nomination must reach the CGA office not later than the 18 September 2020 close of business.

5.Opening of the CGA Office

Since the announcement of the national state of disaster in March, the CGA office has been closed. As part of the adjusted return to operations, we will be officially opening the office as from the 7 September 2020. The office will open Monday to Friday from 09h30 to 15h30 daily.

We will be implementing and adhering to all safety protocols for both staff and visitors. We, therefore, request that clubs visiting our office must adhere to these protocols and regulations.
