Central Gauteng Athletics hosted its 1st Track and Field event of 2021/22 season on Saturday, 02 October 2021 at Boksburg Stadium.

One of the highlights of the day dominated by rainy weather was the Discus Thrower, Wesley Badenhorst who broke the African record when he landed the personal best throw of 70.50m in the U15 boys’ category. He smashed the African Discus throw record of 70.32m set by Frantz Kruger of Kempton Park AC in May 2002.

A Grade 9 learner and new African record holder improved his personal best of 69.96m to become the first-ever South African Sub-Youth athlete to throw over 70m which is also a new South African record.

During the post-event interview, Badenhorst said he works hard to ensure that he achieves great performances, he wakes up at 4 AM every day and practices before going to school, and even at lunchtime he usually practices with his friend. “l to leave here with 72 meters, not say l put myself under pressure l usually take it easy during these events but off-season am training harder.”

We are pleased with the opening of the Track and Field season with such remarkable performances dispute rainy weather including a record-breaking performance by Badenhorst. Badenhorst really made history considering that he is still a sub youth athlete with lots expected from him, we’re so proud of him, said CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks.

The next league meeting will be on 16 October 2021
