Central Gauteng Athletics held the Cross Country League powered by MTN Foundation at Sam Ntuli Stadium in Thokoza, over this past Saturday, 4 May 2019.
We witnessed great support by both athletes and spectators with over 2000 people gathered at the event to witness great performances of 976 athletes that took part in this initial seasons’ league.
The event started with the under 8 boys and girls who run a distance of 1km loop. Neo Nhliyani and Sihawa Mlambo from Simunye Global Athletics Club dominated and won their respective races in the age category 8 and 9 years old. “I am happy about the performance as it was the first league and my plan is to maintain the performance throughout the season, said Neo Nhliyani in the post-event interview.
CGA Selection criteria states that an athlete must run any 4 out of 8 league events plus the CGA Championships to be considered for selection to represent the Province at the National Championships. The championships will be held over two days for the first time in Pretoria on the 7 and 8 September 2019.
The under 13 girls’ event was dominated by Dieketseng Motsoeneng from Run Zone Athletics Club who won gold in the distance of 3km.
James Mgcina of SAPS Athletics Club in the veteran 8km race and dominated the last 2 laps till the finish line in the time of 23.45 to claim victory.
One of the highlight events was the senior men 4km race, this year it started with Kabelo Melamu of Murry and Roberts Athletics Club winning the race in the time of 11.02. The last event of the day which is the 10km was won by Lesetja Papo of Tsakani Athletics Club.
The next CGA Cross Country league event will be held at Dobsonville Communal Hall in Soweto on the 11 May 2019.
