Track & Field
2024-03-20

Central Gauteng Athletics successfully hosted the 2024 CGA Senior Track and Field

Provincial Championships on the 16 March 2024 at the UJ Athletics Stadium.

CGA senior athletes kept the momentum going this past weekend at the senior

provincial championships which are very important as it is an Olympic year. The

championships were hosted following the 4 successful Track and Field leagues hosted

by CGA to ensure athletes have enough competition to prepare, qualify and secure

their spot at the provincial team to represent the province at the National Senior

Championships in mid-April.

A stunning performance delivered by Sibusiso Msibi of UJ in the senior men 1500m.

Msibi led the race from the start to secure a gold position in the time 03:47.41, securing

the silver medal was his teammate Nkosinathi Sibiya clocking 03:48.42 and taking

home a bronze medal was Nicholas Whittaker also in the colours of UJ in the time of

03:50.08.

Chane Vermuelen of HSRB finished got a well-deserved gold medal in the 200m

senior women event in the time 23.86 securing her space in the team to represent

CGA at ASA Championships as she ran a qualifying time. Kayla la Grange of UJ also

ran a qualifying time of 24.04 to appear with a silver medal on the provincial podium.

In third place clocking an ASA qualifier of 24.69 was Mpontsheng Sekese of Masai.

We are looking forward to outstanding performances from these athletes at the ASA

Senior Championships.

CGA’s shotput specialist Kyle Blignaut was also on the field this past weekend

confirming his position for shotput selection with an incredible performance of 18.89.

In a post event interview, Blignaut indicated that he is now based in Italy with his new

coach. He further mentioned that he is looking forward to getting back in form as he

feels he has lost the rhythm of competing in SA. Blignaut will be working on reclaiming

the shotput senior men national title this year as he did not compete last year due to

an injury.

The highlight of the day was the battle between the long-distance runners in the senior

men 5000m, as we spotted some CGA elite athletes on the start line of this race.

Kabelo Mulaudzi of Boxer who was amongst the favorite won the race in the time of

14:10.93. In second place was his teammate Chris Mhlanga clocking 14:20.63. Ryan

Mphahlele who appeared in new colors of FFA claimed the third position in the time of

14:34.74. We are confident that the above-mentioned athletes will definitely represent18 March 2024

the province well at the 2024 ASA Senior Championships with a possibility of securing

the national title in this event.
