Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the 3rd league of the 2024 CGA Track and Field season this past Saturday, 17 February 2024 at Germiston Stadium.

With over 1000 athletes supporting the league including athletes from our sister provinces and neighboring countries like Mozambique and Botswana entering the meeting to better their performances during this interesting Olympic Games season.

The day kicked off very well on the track with the 400m senior men hurdles where Sabelo Dhlamini of UJ secured the 1st position clocking 0:52.31 and in the 2nd position was Herbert Keanu of Germiston Callies clocking 0:55.36.

As expected, the 5000m senior men and women event produced all the fireworks of the day. The men event featured the likes of Andries Sesedi, Chris Mhlanga, Nkosinathi Sibiya, Boikanyo Motlhamme, Marko Bucarizza, Cacisile Sosibo and Corlize Stoltz on the women race. It was a very close battle between the top 3 finishers in the senior men event with Chris Mhlanga of Boxer opening the lead in the last 2 laps to claim victory in the time of 14:37.71. Finishing second place was Andries Sesedi of Nedbank clocking 14:40.33 with Nkosinathi Sibiya in UJ colors settling for the 3rd position in the time of 14:57.74.

It was a great teamwork to see from these two athletes who are also selected to represent the province at the ASA 10km Championships in early March 2024.  To close the podium in the 5000m race was Lona Diko of Warriors of West in the time 19:07.78.

Among favourite races of the day was the senior men 800m event which saw Boikanyo Motlhamme of UJ who clocked an impressive 1:49.72. Motlhamme is the 2023 SA 2km Cross Country Champion and building up well for this current season. In a post interview Motlhamme highlighted that his goal this year is to improve his personal best of 1:47 in the 800m event and to qualify for the National Championships. Taking the second position was his teammate Ntuthuko Ndimande in the time of 1:53.95 and settling for the third position clocking 1:55.36 was Brandon Viljoen of Nedbank.

The field event also had a lot of action as the senior men shotput was led by Goitsemodimo Nkele of TAC with a throw of 15.52 to secure the 1st position. A 11.40 throw by Tshepang Saboshego of Mamepe secured his 2nd position and to close the podium in a bronze position was Cian De Villiers of Nories with a 08.07 distance throw.

With only 1 league remaining before the provincial championships, CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks says she looks forward to seeing more athletes competing this season in order for the province to have a very strong team at the national championships.
