Exceptional Performances At 2nd CGA Track And Field League Meeting

Central Gauteng Athletics kept momentum of athletes with the 2nd CGA Track and Field league meeting hosted at Germiston Stadium this past Saturday. The 2nd Track and Field league of an Olympic year was greatly supported and attracted athletes from our sister provinces as well as athletes from outside country with a group of athletes from Germany. 

In the 5000m junior men, Zenzile Pheko of Kopano stunned the crowds with his exceptional performance to secure a gold position in the time of 15:11.26 Pheko who is the current 5km Road Running National Junior Champion will be part of the South African Team to the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade Serbia on the 30th of March 2024. In the post event interview Pheko highlighted that is goal is also to qualify in the 5000m event for the Olympic Games later this year. In the 2nd position was Kevin Hickley of BHAC in the time of 15:14.60 followed by Mavela Makhubela of Tembisa clocking 16:24.34 to close the podium.

Among favourite races of the day was the Senior men 1500m which Sibusiso Msibi of UJ dominate clocking 03:53.90. Taking the second position was his teammate Ntuthuko Ndimande in the time 03:58.47 and settling for the third position also in the colors of UJ was Lehlohonolo Lusiti clocking 03:58.47.

The Long Jump senior men is one of the events which saw spectators bust of applause when Cheswill Johnson of UJ secured his gold medal position landing jump in an amazing distance of 7.83. We are confident as the Province that Johnson will once again make the Olympic Games Team representing the province very well.

In the 100m senior women event, Rebekka Haase of Germany displayed a showstopper sprint performance to finish 1st in the time 11.27. Claiming the 2nd position was Sinethemba Ngema in the time 12.04 and settling for the 3rd position was Kaylee le Roux of UJ clocking 12.24.

With only 2 leagues remaining before the provincial championships, CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks says she looks forward to seeing more athletes competing this season in order for the province to have a very strong team at the national championships. She also sends appreciation of having international athletes competing at our leagues so that our athletes can push themselves to greater performances.
