Central Gauteng Athletics gets closer to the end of 2020 Track and Field season at UJ Athletics Stadium, Soweto Campus with over 1,300 athletes on Saturday 22 February 2020.
Starting off the day with long-awaited steeplechase events with a distance of 1500m – 3000m Steeplechase (U15, 17, 19, Senior Men and Women) as it was the first steeplechase event this season. The athletes did not disappoint as Pretorius Emile of Germiston Harries Callies opened with a great performance in 1500m to secure his win in the time of 05:00. In the 2000m Steeple Chase, OfentseBokanaof Murray and Roberts clocked 06:35.9, while his fellow club and training partner TshepoNtutwanaclaimed victory in the 3000m steeplechase to finish in an impressive time of 9:04.4.
“It was great to have steeplechase events for the first time in the season, athletes and coaches really showed appreciation on the effort of the commission”, comments by CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks during the post-event interview. MzwakheMavudla of UJ took the victory this time around with TebatsoMashimby of Boksburg settling for the second place in the 3000m Senior Men Walk. The two prominent provincial walkers’ battle has been very interesting with Mavundla claiming two victories and Mashimby only taking one win this season.
The battle of training partners continued in the High Jump senior women event between Marlize Higgins, Julia Du Plessis and Mariette Botha of UJ. The ladies displayed exceptional competitiveness with a close win of Marlize in the height of 1.70 followed by Julie and Mariette in the heights of 1.55 and 1. 60 respectively.
In an overcast afternoon and during the race a sudden rain sums up the action of the day in the 10,000m Senior Men and Women event, which was started by a total of 42 athletes chasing the victory. Prince Jaliof Take it Easy prevailed after he maintained his pace throughout the race with the leading group and only broke out in the 15th lap to finish in the time of 31:10.43, followed by Tshepiso Khati with a time of 31:34.2, and Kwanda Longoza with a time of 31:35.7 secured the top three positions.
