Central Gauteng Athletics has once again partnered with the Gauteng Department of Sports, Art, Culture and Recreation to host the O.R. Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games. The participating regions from Gauteng Provinces namely West Rand, Sedibeng, Johannesburg Tshwane and Ekurhuleni with the 6th team being School Sports Team. The regions competed in Track and Field discipline over two days, Saturday and Sunday, 23 – 24 October 2021 at Germiston Athletics Stadium in Ekurhuleni.
The games consist of 6 sporting codes namely; athletics, swimming, chess, rugby, netball and football, which took part with the focus age group for athletics being the under 16 (born in 2006 or 2007)
The hosting region Ekurhuleni was very strong and ended up securing the second position with a total of 18 medals (gold 11 and silver 7 medals). While Sedibeng region claims the top three medals tally spot with a total of 19 Medals (gold 6, silver 7 and bronze 6 medals). School Sport conquered to secure the first spot on the medal tally and successfully dominated the medal tally with an overall of 27 medals (gold 16, silver 5 and bronze 6 medals).
Mrs Marissa Rose, Director of Sport Development at Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation confirmed that the purpose of the Games is aimed at reviving sports within communities, increasing participation and identifying talented athletes.
Central Gauteng Athletics Development Officer Siphiwe Sikhosana was pleased with the level of performance and the talent unearthed during the Games. “As the Federation, we will now ensure that the talented athletes are channelled to various local clubs including athletes with disabilities who were part of the Games.”, said Skhosana.
