Central Gauteng Athletics proudly hosted the 1st Track and Field event of the 2022/2023 season on Saturday, 1 October 2022, at Germiston Stadium.
The 1st league focused on the sub-youth age category (primary age group), which saw great support in the number of athletes and spectators coming through on Saturday. The day started with exceptional performances in the events of Boys’ 11 High jump, Girls’ 11 Long Jump, Boys’ 13 Shotput and Girls’ 13 Javelin.
One of the hottest events which got spectators’ attention was the Boys’ U11 Long Jump, Khotso Motsamai of Nedbank broke the provincial record by jumping a distance of 5.13m. He was followed by a strong challenge from Du Plessis, Kevin of Boksburg Athletics Club, who finished second with a 4.63m jump.
Another stunning performance was the girl’s U13 discus event, where we witnessed the girls setting the best performances with Landsberg Chanlee of Hoerskool Noordhewel to secure a gold position with a distance of 35,19m. Her teammate Vermaas Marni came second with a length of 34,10m. The bronze position went to Venter Kaylin, also from Hoërskool Noordhewel, with a distance of 31,80. Hoërskool Noordhewel sealed their dominance in the throws with boys U9 Turbo Javelin that Wohlfahrt Luan achieving a length of 19,58m.
In the 100m Boys 13 event, Fairlie Jaydone of Nedbank dominated the event clocking an impressive 11:65, followed by Simpson Jaden of Hoerskool Randburg in the time of 11:87 and securing the 3rd place was Molefe Molefe of Cool Running in the time of 11:93.
CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks, at the post-event interview, thanked all athletes, coaches and spectators who took the time to come and support the 1st league. Overall the event was a great success, and we look forward to a great pre-season in supporting our primary age group. We are looking forward to provincial championships and Inter-Provincial Championships due to take place in Pretoria later in November 2022.
