Central Gauteng Athletics kicks off the 2019/20 Track & Field Season

The Track and Field Development Open meeting which was hosted on Saturday 21 September 2019, was extremely well supported at Germiston Athletics Stadium. Approximately 2000 athletes and spectators supported the meeting.

This Season returned passionately with the intention to identify talent in the age category of Boys and Girls between 7 to 17 years old. Track and Field commission incorporated the Johannesburg Soncini trails to select a JHB team to participate at Gauteng OR Tambo Sonici provincial games on the 26/27 October at Germiston Stadium.

Following a full-day programme of the first track and field season, the evidence was witnessed with the first race of the day, labelled All Road vs Track in the event of 1500m walk. Thuto Mokoena of Water Fall Athletics Club unlocked the track events with a victory in the category of U17 Boys and Girls walking a distance of 5000m by clocking 26:41.

“Today’s race was tough and filled with strong and competitive athletes. l started to break among the group at 3500m and flow with the momentum towards finish the line”. Said Thuto as he cools off during the interview post-event.

South African 2019 schools of Champions, Zonica Lindeque of UJ Sports Club, confirmed her strength and showed incredible talent in the field of Shot Put, by dominating the age category of U15 girls with a personal best of 15:73.

Diamond Athletics Club claimed their consecutive victory of the day by Tyler Howard and Charnise J.V Vuuren who ran a distance of 200m sprint in the category of Sub Youth Girls and Boys, ending the race in a time of 24:87 and 27:82 respectively.

Tumelo Manenzhe who placed 6th position in 2018 Schools Championships at Germiston Stadium, he starts the season with an impressive performance by earning 1st position in the category of U17 boys running a distance of 3,000m. Tumelo started to lead race towards last three laps and increase pace till he crosses the line in a time of 9:34.

Coaches are reminded that it is important to keep to deadlines as the Transport arrangements go hand in hand with the entries from those areas. Athletes must Pre-Enter using the attached Entry Form, entry fee for both athletes and spectators will be R20 Per Person for leagues.

“We urge Coaches, Athletes, and Parents to pre-enter in time, correct information and full details are needed to enter the information on the system, we need more coaches to support this system”. Said CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks.

Among other highlights, youth athlete Swayde Lessing of Boksburg Athletics Club was in impressive form as she took the 100m Hurdles event in a finish time of 15:89 seconds. Swayde, who took 6th position in field event of the high jump at ASA 2018 Track and Field Championships held in Paarl. She said her training sessions are going very well and she is in the right place at the momentum.

Siread Meyer of Germiston Callies started the athletics at age of 7, in 2012 he partakes at ASA Track and Field Championships were he secured 9th position in the field event of Long Jump. This time Shane took effort and showcase incredible talent in the U17 youth man by landing at 5.18m.
