Central Gauteng Athletics hosted a very successful last league of the 2022 Cross Country season on Saturday, 30th July 2022 at Delta Park, Randburg.

A cloudy day it was, regardless of the weather conditions as expected over 1000 athletes came out in numbers to display exceptional performances. It was great to see the support from all the Cross Country athletes as the Cross Country league season concluded. The last league event saw the athletes competing with dedication as this was their final chance to prepare for the CGA Cross Country Championships on the 20th of August 2022 at Kagiso Sports Complex.

The day took off with Boys and Girls under 8 years running the 1km race, where we saw so much energy and resilience from the beginners which was a great event to watch.

As the Girls under 14 & 15 event running a 4km distance took off at midday, absolutely outstanding performances were witnessed with Polite Mbokani of Murray & Roberts claiming 1st position in the time of 15:21 followed by her club mate Lerato Mashilo settling for the 2nd position in the time of 15:47 in the under 14 category.

Another interesting event of the day has to the Veteran Men 8km event where we saw an energetic performance by Phillip Phakwago of Pirates who showed extreme endurance from the start to finish clocking the time of 27:27. The senior men and women 10km event was another highlight of the day with Lehlogonolo Lusiti of Warriors of West club claiming the 1st position in the time of 33:47. Cacisile Sosibo of Boxer took the women event in the time of 36:47. In the post-event interview Sosibo indicated that she is ready for the provincial championships and to represent the province at the National Championships in September 2022.

As we are building up to the Provincial Championships taking place on the 20th of August 2022 fighting for the top 4 spots to be part of the provincial team to the National Championships. Part of the selection criteria will also be the submission of an ID or birth certificate not later than 12 August 2022 and running at least 3 leagues out of the 7 hosted this season.
