Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the 6th league of the 2022 Cross Country season on Saturday, 16 July 2022 at Alberton Dam. The 6th league event saw the athletes willing to compete and prepare for the CGA Cross Country championships on the 20th of August 2022 at Kagiso Sports Complex.
A very productive and energetic day with over 1,000 athletes taking part in the event. The 1st event of the day was the Boys and Girls under 8 years running 1km race, in which Baswabile Molobela took 1st position in the girl’s category in the time of 04:36 and Junior Mwa took 1st position in the boy’s category in the time of 04:29. This was a clear indication that there is lots of talent and a bright future for CGA Cross Country.
Dipuo Mashamaite, Simone Adams and Khanyisile Thwala from UJ Athletics Club dominated the 2km Senior Women event clocking with 8:36, 08:37, and 08:58 respectively. Hoping that they shall maintain the same energy and dedication in claiming those positions in the CGA Cross Country Championships as they all have taken part in at least 3 leagues as stated by the CGA selection criteria.
The other highlight of the day was the Boys under 17 in the 6km race which saw Johannes Morepe running an impressive time of 20:27 to claim the gold podium position. However, much focus was on the 4km senior men’s event which had exceptional performances, in the men’s race Nicholas Seoposengwe took 1st position in the time of 12:21.
With only 1 league remaining for the season before the 2022 CGA Championships taking place on the 20th of August 2022 fighting for the top 4 spots to be part of the provincial team to Nationals. CGA Selection Criteria for Cross Country Championships states that an athlete must run 3 of the 5 leagues to be considered for the Provincial Championships.
