Central Gauteng Athletics successfully hosted a massively supported Cross Country 2nd league this past weekend at Tsakane Baseball Fields in collaboration with Tsakane Athletics Club. This league enjoyed exceptional support of over 1000 athletes from the various clubs in the province.

A programme lined up with exciting events, we saw the day unfold with one of the intriguing events to watch being the senior women 2km combined with the Youth women 2km event where Cian Oldknow dominated the senior race to clock 07:39. Lee Nyathi who is a well-known CGA walker clocked 08:07 to finish in the silver medal position overall and 1st in the youth women category. In a post event interview with one of the Masai club coach, highlighted that Lee Nyathi is multi-talented individual. The club is looking forward to her outstanding performances in this Cross Country season.

Another fascinating race between the 2023 National 1500m Champion Chemene Mentz of Helpmekaar and Polite Mbokani of Murray and Roberts. The two athletes pose great potential and dedication as they maintained their positions from the 1st league. Chemene dominated the event from the 1st lap clocking 15:57 with Polite settling for the 2nd position with a time difference of a second. Also maintaining her third position was Megan Roome of Helpmekaar in the time of 16:05. The three athletes seem to be dedicated to keep bettering their performances in each and every league.

The 10km open women and men race being the main event of the day did not disappoint with more than 50 athletes on the starting line. In the male event, Chris Mhlanga took the lead in the last 2 laps to go and he never looked back to finish in the time 32:10. Kabelo Melamu of Murray and Roberts was forced to settle for the 2nd position clocking 32:12 and in 3rd place was Nicholas Seoposengwe of Boxer athletics club to complete the podium positions. In the women category, Cacisile Sosibo leading the ladies from the start of the race to claim the 1st position in the time 36:56, representing Distance Athletics Club Karabo More settling for the 2nd position in the time 39:07 and in the colours of Ubora AC was Kathryn Van Meter finishing in 3rd position in the time 41:23.
