Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the 4th league of 2023 Cross Country season on Saturday, 24 June 2023 at Marivate Park, Daveyton, in collaboration with East Athletics Club.

A fairly warm day with over 1200 athletes taking part at the event. The first race of the day was the (beginners)boys and girls under 8 years running a 1km distance, which Junior Mwa of Tembisa who has maintained the first position in all three leagues this season won his race. In the girls category Alexia Visser of Benoni Northerns came first to secure her gold position.

One of the highlights of the day was the Senior Men 4km event which saw Nkosinathi Sibiya running his time of 11:57 to claim the 1st position, with just a second difference of one second from Sibiya was Kabelo Seboko in Boxer colours who claimed the second position clocking 11:58. In third position was Modupi Tladi of Masai. Dominating the senior women 4km event was Hollywood AC’s Cian Oldknow in the time of 14:38.

The senior men 10km event kept spectators on their feet as Chris Mhlanga and Simon Sibeko battled it out on the daveyton course. This was one exciting event with so much anticipation as to who was going to win the race. The two athletes delivered exceptional perfomances with Mhlanga claiming the gold position in the time of 31:49 and Sibeko settling for the silver position in the time of 31:53. In the colours of Maxed Elite, Bennet Seloyi also gave his all to finish 3rd in the time of 32:15.

In a relaxed pace of the women 10km race, Sisanda Dumisa in UJ colours dominated from start to finish clocking 39:09 with Casey Bosman representing the Kovsie finishing second in the time of 42:45 and finishing third in the time 44:42 was Lebogang Ramela also in UJ colours.

With only 2 leagues remaining for the 2023 Cross Country season, some of the athletes will be shifting the focus to the 2023 CGA Championships taking place on the 19th of August 2023. Athletes will be fighting for the top 4 spot in order to be considered in the Provincial team to National Championships which will be held on the 16 September 2023. Athletes are reminded they have to run at least 3 out of 6 leagues plus the CGA Championships to be considered for selection to represent the province.
