Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the second last league of the season on Saturday, 08 July 2023 at Westonaria Sports Complex, in collaboration with Mohlakeng Athletics Club.

Another exciting league filled with great competition was witnessed on Saturday with over 1000 athletes taking part at the event. It was great to see lots of upcoming talent and the fact that CGA has a lot of talent depth as some of CGA’s elite athletes went to the ABSA Run Your City race in Durban.

One of the highlights of the day was the Junior Men 2km event which saw Sibusiso Msibi of UJ clocking 05:26 to claim the 1st position and in the second position was Jaden de Wet from Helpmekaar in the time of 05:48. Masai had to settle for 3rd position represented by Fernando Macavele with his finishing time of 05:55. The Junior Women 2km category was dominated by Mahlatsi  Ngwenya of Ubuhle to cross the finish line first in the time 07:28 with Mosale Thobejane in the colors of Gallopers finishing second clocking 07:59. With just a second difference from Thobajane was Portia Ramaoka of Palmirdge finishing in the time of 08:00.

The intriguing development event of girls under-14 saw Katelin Heymans of 32GI strive for victory to secure the first position in the time 13:10, in second place representing Nedbank in the time of 13:32 was Jodene Shawe. Settling for the third position was Jade Doran of Benoni Northerns. This proves that there is so much potential especially if such talent is handled with care, indeed the future for CGA is very bright.

The Veteren Men event was another showstopper of the day as we witnessed a lot of competition amongst athletes participating in the event. The above mentioned event was dominated by Pule Tjaoana of Waterfall City, the athlete poses signs of great fitness as he has dominated in at least four leagues this season with great improvement in his performance this week as he clocked 21:42. Vincent Seng of Bedfordview also gave his all to secure the second position in the time of 22:02. Lefu Lephoto of Mamepe took the 3rd positions in the time of 22:36.

With only 1 league remaining for the 2023 Cross Country season, the focus for most athletes will shift to focus on the 2023 CGA Championships taking place on the 19th of August 2023. Athletes will be fighting for the top 4 spot in order to be considered in the Provincial team to National Championships which will be held on the 16 September 2023.

Athletes are reminded they have to run at least 3 out of 6 leagues plus the CGA Championships to be considered for selection to represent the province.
