Central Gauteng Athletics concluded the 2023 Cross Country league season successfully on Saturday, 22nd July 2023 at Delta Park, Randburg in collaboration with RAC.

It is very unfortunate that there at the same time as the start of the first event an accident of a bus with a number of athletes was reported to have happened just outside the venue. A number of athletes were reported injured and not being able to participate on the day as they had to be rushed to hospital. All athletes are discharged with an exception of one athlete who required more medical attention.  We would also like to take this opportunity to wish all the injured athletes who were involved in the above mentioned accident speedy recovery.

The day unfolded very well with athletes coming out in numbers to display excellent performances and compete with dedication as this was their final chance to prepare for the CGA Cross Country Championships taking place on the 19th of August 2023 at Kagiso Stadium.

A fairly cold morning took off with Boys and Girls under 8 years running the 1km race, where we saw so much excitement, energy and resilience from this development age group which was a great event to watch.

In the senior women 2km event we witnessed absolutely outstanding performances with Farida Zwane of Rockies claiming the 1st position in the time of 07:47 followed by  Makoma Batji of Maxed Elite settling for the 2nd position in the time of 08:29. The bronze position went to Ashley Shawe of Nedbank finishing in 08:31. In the senior men 2km, Enoch Bokaba of Murray and Roberts portrayed an extreme endurance from the start to finish clocking the time of 06:28, in second place it was Tinashe Bure representing Waterfall City in the time 06:32 and in third position was Sicelo Ngcobo of Kagiso striders clocking 06:35.

Another highlight of the day was the battle in the Men U23 4km event which Andries Sesedi of Nedbank claimed the gold position in the time of 12:50 followed by Johannes Morepe of Murray and Roberts clocking 12:59. The 3rd position was Mzwakhe Mashaba of Boxer in the time of 13:05.

As we are building up to the Provincial Championships taking place on the 19th of August 2023 fighting for the top 4 spots to be part of the provincial team to National Championships.

All athletes must have submitted a South African ID document or birth certificate by 16th of August 2023. No ID documents or Birth Certificates will be accepted on 19th August 2023 at the Provincial Championships.
