Central Gauteng Athletics hosted a very successful Sub Youth (Primary School age) Provincial Championships on the 18th November 2023 at Germiston Stadium.
The Sub Youth Provincial Championships was hosted following 3 Sub Youth leagues of which athletes were expected to participate in at least 2 leagues plus provincial championships to meet the selection criteria.
One of the fascinating event of the day had to be the girls U7 60m where we saw I have talent athletes dominating the event with Mieke Van Wyk claiming the first position in the time 09:51 followed by her teammate Lume Erusmus in second position in the time 09:93 in third position also in the colors of I have Talent was Elzane Coetzee clocking the finish line in the time 10:11.The athletes represented the club very well on the provincial podium taking home the gold,silver and bronze medals respectively.
In the middle distances Boys U11 1200m event Indiphile Myeki of KAC secured a gold medal in the time 3:38.00,securing a silver medal representing Boxer athletics Club was Philani Luthuli 3:48.54 and taking home a bronze medal was Armand Botha of UTS clocking 3:49.34. In the girls U11 1200m event we also witnessed great competition amongst the athletes with Mahlatse Mamonyane of East athletics club representing her club on the provincial podium with a gold medal with a finishing time 3:58.97,appearing on the podium with a silver medal was Katelyn Van Staden with her time 4:00.42 and closing the podium taking home a bronze medal in the time 4:02.44 was Kgomotso Pholoanyane of FFA.
In the Girls U13 shotput finals, Boksburg AC athletes,Lanelda Herbst and Megan Cunha took charge of the event taking home the gold and silver medals with a throwing distance of 10.61 and 10.30 respectively, and securing a bronze position with a distance of 10.04 was Mijuan Badenhorst.
CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks during the post event interview, thanked all athletes, coaches and spectators who supported the 2023 Sub Youth Season at the championships. She also wished the athletes who will be selected to represent the province at the Sub Youth Track and Field Inter Provincial Championships taking place in Mpumalanga on the 2nd of December 2023 good luck in advance.
