Central Gauteng Athletics proudly hosted the 2nd Track and Field league meeting of 2023/2024 season on Saturday 14th of October 2023 at Germiston Stadium.

These league meetings are focused on the sub youth age category (primary age group between 7 and 13 years old). We are glad of the support from clubs and parents we continue to receive for these pre-season leagues.

The 1st event of the day Race Walking 5km event which was aimed at being used to select the CGA team to participate at the upcoming Race Walking Inter-Provincial Championships which will be taking place on the 21st of October 2023 in Pretoria. Walkers in their respective club colours posed to be in great form and ready to represent Central Gauteng Athletics at the interprovincial Championships. In the Boys 5km walk, Yamkela Shosha in Murray & Roberts colours clocked 27:37.68 to secure a gold position, in a silver position was Olebogeng Chaba of Mohlakeng in the time 31:13.17 and settling for bronze position was Thandolwethu Ntini of WCAC in the time 31:14.21.

Another stunning performance was Girls U7 60m where I Have Talent (IHT) girls dominated the race with Miekie Van Wyk in first position in the time 09:59 followed by her team mate in second place Elzane Coetze in the time 10:09 and finishing third also from IHT was Lume Erasmus in the time 10:19. It is so exciting to see these young athletes competing with so much joy and dedication and also running exceptional times. The province has an assignment to cultivate and nature such talent as it holds so much potential.

In the boys U13 100m event we saw great competition amongst athletes who seem to be enjoying the competition. In this event Chibuna Ehirim of IHT dominated the sprint race to clock 11.66, in the second place was Noah Naaido of Lydiard in the time 11.98 and settling for third position was Arnord Gumunyu of FFA in the time 12.03.

One of the most interesting field events was the Girls U13 Discuss, where we saw Nories girls throw very good distances with Leane Korn of Nories throwing a distance of 35.55 to claim the gold position, the second place throw of 35.18 was from her teammate Kara Van Eeden with a distance 35.18 and Lume Hanekom also in Nories colours came third throwing 34.59.

CGA Track and Field Chairperson Maggie Dicks at the post event interview, thanked all athletes, coaches, parents and spectators who took time to come and support the 2nd league. The event was a great success and we are looking forward to hosting the last league on the 4th of November 2023. Based on the great performances at the past 2 events the province is confident it will be selecting strong team to represent the province at the Inter-Provincial Championships at the beginning of December in Mpumalanga.
