Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the 1st Road Running Provincial Championships last weekend, Sunday 28 January 2024. The CGA 10km Championships were incorporated in the Johnson Crane Hire Marathon hosted by Benoni Harriers at Willowmoore Park, Benoni.

The Championships were greatly supported by a number of provincial athletes in order to secure themselves a space in the provincial squad for the National 10KM Championships that will take place on the 10 March 2024 at Marks Park in Johannesburg.

In the 10km Open Women category the Boxer athletes dominated the race with the Phalula twins making the race a family affair taking home the gold and silver medal respectively. Lebo Phalula-Mzazi claimed the gold podium position in the time 0:35:35 and Lebohang Phalula-Luthuli clocked 0:36:51 to secure a silver position. The 3rd place to another Boxer teammate Cornelia Joubert in the time 0:37:40.

The Open Men category, Gladwin Mzazi in the colours of Boxer also triumph with a time 0:30:25 to claim a gold medal on the provincial podium. Andries Sesedi had to settle for a silver medal in the time 0:30:31 and a bronze medal went to Bernad Seloyi in Mr. Price clocking 0:30:40.

Overall, the Provincial Championships were very successful, and the province would like to thank Benoni Harriers for hosting a great event. We will indeed select a strong team to represent the province at the National 10km Championships. The team will be announced in due time.
