Central Gauteng Athletics sent out a very strong team of 53 athletes to represent the province at the ASA 5km Championships which took place this past Saturday, 17 June 2023 at FNB Stadium in Nasrec. The provincial team did not disappoint as Team CGA dominated the championships winning at least three of four titles that were up for grabs at this inaugural road race competition.
The 1st event of the day was the Junior Girls 5km, where we saw CGA’s Naledi Makgatha dominate the race to clock 18:31. Also representing the province very well in the Junior Boys category was all the podium finishers in CGA colours led by Zenzile Pheko winning a gold medal in the time of 15:02 followed by his provincial teammate Corne De Fouw taking home a silver medal in the time of 15:05. Realeboga Smith of CGA closing the podium bagging a bronze medal for the province as he finished 3rd in the time of 15:21.
The Championships were concluded with a hot 5km Senior Elite men and mass participation race, this is where we witnessed another tight competition between CGA’s Nicolas Seoposengwe and his training partner Maxime Chaumeton.This event was yet again dominated by Central Gauteng Athletics as Seoposengwe was crowned the 2023 National 5km champion clocking 14:18 followed by Chaumeton claiming the 2nd position in the time of 14:23 and securing a bronze position on the ASA podium was Chris Mhlanga also in CGA provincial colours in the time of 14:29.
As a province we are very proud and excited by the great performances delivered by our athletes considering that these were the first ever National Championships in the distance of 5km. We wish all the athletes that will be selected to represent the country later in the year all the best.
