Central Gauteng Athletics was well represented at the 2023 National Marathon Championships that took place this past weekend, Sunday the 12th of March 2023 in Durban.
The day started with light rainy weather as the runners made their way to the start of the Durban International Marathon (incorporating the ASA Marathon Championships). It was a perfect weather for middle distance running. The province had sent a very strong team of upcoming athletes with great talent and potential, which was selected from the provincial championships held at Striders 32km race in January 2023 and various Marathon races.
Simon Sibeko secured the National title for the province and was crowned the 2023 ASA National Champion. He ran his personal best in the time of 2:12.06. Sibeko took the silver medal overall of the main race – which was an amazing performance. CGA won the Men’s team prize, with Simon Sibeko clocking 02:12:05, Samuel Moloi who crossed the finish line in the time 02:20:45, in the time of 02:21:27 was Rirhandzu Rhangani and Lesetja Papo sealing the gold team prize for CGA in the time 02:22:38.
A very strong women’s team, which was dominated by veteran category athletes did not disappoint, as we saw the ladies bringing home the silver team prize. The team prize winning was led by the former national champion over the 42.2km distance, Cornelia Joubert finishing in the time 02:51:20, Elizabeth Potter clocking 03:08:28, Christina Silale crossing the finish line in the time 03:11:50. The 4th athlete to seal the silver team prize and podium position was Enie Manzini clocking 03:52:09.
CGA President Steven Khanyile is very delighted that the province is opening the year with this first National Championships with gold and silver team prizes.
This is indeed promising to be a great year for the province. Well done to all the athletes that represented the province especially to Simon Sibeko for his exceptional performance.
